Design Our review unit of the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 was an industrial silver-and-black machine that looks like it’s meant to do a job. Dell.com allows you to select some vibrant colors, however, including red, blue and gold. The silver lid on our unit features Dell’s logo in black and has a gritty texture that makes the system easy to grip and carry. Inside, the deck is a dark gray with a soft-touch coating that felt comfortable against our wrists and a black, island-style keyboard....

If you’re looking for something smaller or for kids, the HP Stream 11, which lasts over 8 hours on a charge, is a solid option....

Design I’m a fan of Inspiron laptops in general, but they sometimes fall into the trap of mimicking the MacBook a little too closely. However, this iteration of the Inspiron 15 7000 does just enough to distinguish itself. I really like the subtle vertical striations along the dark-gray aluminum lid. It really plays up the glistening black Dell logo in the center and the rear-mounted hinges. The shiny, diamond-cut edge also adds a nice minimalist sparkle to the overall presentation....

Design From afar, the Latitude 5290 2-in-1 looks like most other Surface clones. That is, it’s a tablet with a kickstand and a detachable keyboard. This one is black with the company logo in gray and a fingerprint reader on the right side. The front is where you’ll find a 12.3-inch, 1920 x 1280 display surrounded by a bezel. The coolest part is the kickstand, which auto-deploys. If you stand the tablet up on the desk and press it down, the kickstand shoots out, and you’re in business....
